The film:

Diagnosed with Stage 4 Sarcoma at just 24, Luke Grenfell-Shaw made the extraordinary decision to cycle across the world, from Bristol to Beijing. Now in remission seven years later, his remarkable journey is captured in this powerful documentary that highlights the need for exercise to be embedded in cancer care.

A Life In Tandem follows Luke from running the Bristol Half Marathon mid-chemotherapy, to cycling over 20,000 miles across the globe after chemotherapy, all on a tandem bike, joined by over 800 strangers-turned-friends riding alongside him. Among them is Dev, a 17-year-old Indian schoolboy and fellow cancer survivor who joins Luke for a 1,000-mile stretch through India.

Beyond the extraordinary, the film captures the daily reality of living with cancer, starting with Luke pedalling on a stationary bike in his hospital room during rounds of chemotherapy, radiotherapy and surgery. Though met with initial concern, his doctors concluded the exercise was likely helping him respond better to treatment and cope with its side effects.

“This film is about hope, about finding a way forward when things feel impossible. Even the smallest amount of exercise could make all the difference.” - Luke Grenfell-Shaw, MOVE Against Cancer Patron
